WIRE โ€” By Jimmy Chazama and Sam Banda Jnr: Award winning filmmaker and actor Joyce Mhango Chavula said Wednesday she was honoured to be the ambassador of the third edition of Cape Maclear Film Festival (CMIFF) and that she was looking forward to raise its profile. Mhango Chavula steps in as the face of CMIFF barely a month after she represented the country at the Festival International du Film de Dakhla in Morocco following nomination of her film titled The Gunless Soldier. "As a passionate filmmaker and a local industry player, I am happy to be part of CMIFF family as the ambassador this year. I am looking forward to leveraging the festival's existing networks," the Lilongwe creator, said. She said she will help in creating visibility and awareness across other platforms globally saying this is an international festival. "I hope this partnership will help grow the festival and so, I will work hand in hand with the organisers to achieve this for 2026," Mhango Chavula, who bagged four awards at last year's edition, said. She described CMIFF as a great festival that happens along the beautiful shores of Lake Malawi and that it needs to be properly positioned to attract more audiences that can experience the country to the fullest. CMIFF says in a statement that Mhango Chavula is among the country's most accomplished film industry players hence appointing her the ambassador. CMIFF Team Lead Edward Longwe said Mhango Chavula has been chosen because, beyond her artistry, she also serves as a cultural bridge. "Chavula has worked alongside several international actors and directors and has also participated in global film festivals and symposiums. Hence, we trust her as organisers," Longwe said. Longwe said Mhango Chavula's voice and influence will help CMIFF grow in stature, impact and recognition. "She has vast experience in the industry and with her in, we are geared for the most exciting festival this year and continue from where we left off last year," he said. Last year the festival had international ambassadors, who were the faces of the entire seven-day event. The second edition also saw the festival decorating veteran filmmaker Shemu Joyah with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The third edition of CMIFF will be held at Cape Maclear in Mangochi from October 15 to 17.
